Buildings and Features
Lambton College is noted for its strength in the Technology and Applied Science department due to its proximity to Ontario, Canada's Petrochemical & Industrial Manufacturing sector. Additionally, it is the only school to house an industry fire house in Canada.
In 1998, the RBC Centre (originally named the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre) was built on the college's campus. It is currently the home arena to the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League, and is primarily used as a hockey arena. However, there are numerous shows, concerts and events that happen throughout the year.
Student life
Students have a variety of entertainment options, such as gathering in the student lounge during breaks, enjoying time with friends in the Lion's Den, finding a good book in the library, or going to the common room in the residence. The student council recently updated the furnishings with an outside deck theme.
Lion's Den
The Lion’s den is the campus’ fully licensed pub and entertainment facility. There is plenty to do, with 3 pool tables, an air hockey table, video games, darts, TVs and music.[5]
Residence
Lambton Inn: The Lambton College Residence
The college's dormitory, The Lambton Inn, has 140 double rooms. Each room is equipped with a full bathroom, two desks, beds, armoires, microwave, fridge, and air conditioning.[6] The residence, which used to be a hotel before being converted, is a short walk to the school, which includes the library, student centre and gym. The RBC Centre is on the same property as the college itself. Lambton College also boasts free cable and internet throughout the residence for students. Laundry facilities are available on both the upper and lower levels of the residence. Computers are available in the lobby and there is a kitchenette available for students.
Cineplex Entertainment Lambton 9 is located across the road, while Lambton Mall, restaurants, and grocery stores are all within easy walking distance.[7]
History
Lambton College's students have enjoyed a rich and diverse history. Opening in 1966 Lambton College was the second College in the system to officially open.[8] At this time 45 students were enrolled in five programs at the College.
The Main Campus' cornerstone was dedicated on June 4, 1970. At that time sealed into the cornerstone were: a set of coins and low-denomination bills of the day, a set of stamps of the day, a calendar of the college for 1970-71, a copy of the charter incorporating the College, a seal of the College, a piece of cloth used to cover the stone prior to its unveiling (velvet, dark green and white), all newspaper clippings covering the ceremony, audio tapes of the ceremony, a television tape of the ceremony, audio tapes of the ceremony, a copy of the deed of the land for the College, a list of the community committees that had served the Board of the College up to this point in time, a list of the guests attending the ceremony, a list of the first students of the College up to this point in time, and a copy of this list.[8]
The first president of Lambton College was Wolfgang Franke. He was selected from among 51 candidates, and did not start full time duties until January 1967 and his starting salary was $18 000. When campus staff went to give the first faculty tour, for the first original site, it had to be delayed because the building housing the actual classrooms was locked and no one had the key. Ron Lawrence, one of Lambton’s first faculty members discovered (much to his dismay) that his house key fit the lock.[8]
International
Lambton College has many international partnerships with around 5 000 students attending the college outside of Canada. Lambton College’s largest international partnerships are in China. These partnerships exist are with three prestigious schools in China, Jilin University,[9] Qingdao University[10] and Jiangnan University.[11] Some of these partnerships go back over a decade. Currently at Jilin University, one of China’s top ranked state run universities, more than 2,000 students are enrolled.
Lambton College has also expanded to India and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In 2001, Lambton College opened a campus in Jeddah located on the western side of Saudi Arabia on the Red Sea. This campus is known as the Millennium Institute of Technology & Management.[12]
In 2008, Lambton College entered into a partnership with the Canadian Institute of Vocational Courses in Chandigarh, India. Students from this campus may be able to transfer to Lambton College in the future to finish their program.
Scholarships
The College joined Project Hero, a scholarship program cofounded by General (Ret'd) Rick Hillier, for the families of fallen Canadian Forces members
