Legio duodecima Fulminata (Twelfth Legion, armed with lightning) was levied by Julius Caesar in 58 BC and accompanied him (among other legions) for his campaigns into Gaul, later serving under Caesar to defeat the senate-controlled legions in Pompeii in 48 BC at the Battle of Pharsalus to win him the civil war and establish Imperial Rome.

The Twelfth were notable for being one of only a handful to lose their aquila, the Roman battle standard, without suffering disgrace to the point of disbandment or having been annihilated. The legion continued to serve Rome until the decay of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD.
